"Hobbes on the Limits of Rationality"

 

"This talk considers Hobbes's account of rational action in the context of his repeated failures to solve famous geometrical problems, and his resulting alienation from classical geometry. I argue that, even on his own terms, Hobbes undertook an irrational project, but he was driven to it by the systematic role that geometry played in his philosophy."
